Store Openings & Retail Expansion

Business Challenge

As Nike outlet stores continued to expand across EMEA, the business needed a scalable approach to delivering new store openings and refurbishments while maintaining consistent brand standards, operational readiness and exceptional customer experiences. Rapid expansion across multiple countries required strong governance, cross-functional collaboration and disciplined execution to ensure every new store reflected Nike's global retail vision while responding to local market needs.

My Leadership Role

As Head of Retail Brand for Central Europe and Scandinavia, I led the Retail Brand workstream for more than 50 new store openings, relocations and major refurbishments across France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland and the Nordic region.

My role extended well beyond opening stores. I translated EMEA retail strategy into market execution, ensuring each project aligned with commercial objectives, consumer expectations and global brand standards. Working as the strategic partner between regional leadership and local execution teams, I established the governance, planning and operational frameworks that enabled consistent delivery across multiple international markets.

I provided leadership throughout the entire project lifecycle from concept development and space planning to implementation, operational readiness and launch ensuring every store opened with a strong commercial focus, operational excellence and a seamless customer experience.

Key Stakeholders

Successful retail expansion depended on close collaboration across a broad international stakeholder network, including:

  • Buying & Allocation

  • Retail Operations

  • Merchandising

  • Marketing

  • Real Estate & Construction

  • Space Planning

  • Logistics & Supply Chain

  • Local Country Leadership

  • Store Managers

  • External Vendors and Fixture Suppliers

By aligning commercial priorities with operational execution, we ensured every stakeholder contributed to a successful store launch.

Business Impact

The retail expansion initiative strengthened Nike's ability to scale consistently across multiple European markets while improving the quality and speed of store delivery.

The program delivered:

  • More than 50 successful store openings, relocations and refurbishments across Europe.

  • Faster and more efficient rollout processes through improved governance and cross-functional alignment.

  • Reduced store opening timelines while maintaining high standards of execution and operational readiness.

  • Improved collaboration between Buying, Allocation, Retail Operations and local market teams.

  • Stronger consistency in retail layouts, consumer journeys and visual merchandising across the region.

  • Enhanced customer experiences through optimized store planning and commercially focused retail environments.

  • Support for sustained commercial growth by ensuring every new store launched ready to perform from day one.

Lessons Learned

Successful retail expansion is about far more than opening stores, it is about creating scalable operating models that connect strategy, people and execution. Consistent governance, cross-functional leadership and early stakeholder alignment are essential to delivering retail environments that not only open on schedule but also drive commercial performance from the first day of trading.

This experience reinforced my belief that the most successful retail organizations combine strategic planning with disciplined execution, enabling global standards to be delivered consistently while empowering local markets to succeed.
